PHILLIPE1 METTETAL) was born 02 June 1822, and died 1922.
He married MAGUERITE PATRIQUIN 01 January 1864. She was born 04 January
1839 in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, and died 10 February 1931
in Nova Scotia. Notes for EPHRAIM MATTATALL: My name is Russell Fisher. I live in Springhill, Noa Scotia. My great grandfather was Ephraim Mattatall. I cannot find Martha Jane in Rod's work on your page. I understand he is on his third book now and after reading his first book I hope he has improved. That book was filled with errors. Martha Jane was Ephraim's first child, being born in 1864. She married George Fisher on Sept. 2, 1881. They had eight children. She and George are buried in the Lake Road Cemetery. My father was Earl Fisher. He and my mother had four children. One of his best friends was his first cousin Lester Drown and remember us going over in the summer when Lester was home for a visit. I have a picture ( would have to look for it ) of Lester and my father. Ephraim divided his farm up into sections and gave each child a section for a farm. Leanna's was next to Martha Jane's. A relative in Tatamagouche has pictures of the family when they were young The sisters often traveled to the states and one picture shows them in a studio dressed in their best. Ephraim was not a poor man, but made his money from hemlock. The wood was used as fence posts, but the bark was in great demand by the tanneries. Ephraim wanted to be known as a tough ole fellow, but helped many who were down on their luck. His help came with the promise that they would tell no one of his help. This came out after his death. At a funeral once he said " When I die, I want to be buried in a hickory box, so I can go through Hell just a crackin." Hickory of course cracks when it burns. Ephraim is buried at the back of of his farm. It is very near Mattatall Lake. There about 24 buried there and there is no way to tell who they are. The area is quite grown up , but I nailed a metal cross high in a tree to make it easier to find. Lester Drowne used to look after the plot and even cut EM from tin and placed it on the grave. That piece of tin is still there. When he stopped looking after it people seemed to forget about it. I wonder if he left any thing on this with his family. Ephraim owned the lake , but there is no Mattatall blood in the people who own lots around it. Lots back from the lake are selling for $15,000. I understand. It is a great spot. I am sorry for rambling on and hope that I have not bored you too much. I am a retired teacher of the deaf. /////// 10/00 Note from Russell Fisher: Just a short note to bring you up to date on what has been happening with the Mattatall grave site. The land is presently owned by Germans who have been cutting it into cottage sites around the Lake. They just missed the graves when making a road . Since then some Mattatalls have taken steps to protect the area. The police were taken in and the owner was told that he could not use the land. Yesterday five of us cleared the brush away and raked all the graves . We found over thirty . Ephraim is buried there and so is Leannas twins. The twins are at the bottom of the site. There is still work to be done . We plan to do more exploring for graves and then take in a load of earth to fill the depressions. Next year we hope to erect a proper monument of some type and have a special service to rededicate it as a cemetery. We have a couple of ministers in the clan who can do the service . We took some pictures and will scan one for you if they turn out . I will give notice now that we will be contacting those who have an interest for donations to purchase the monument . One of the local Mattatalls was up to the states a couple of weeks ago and looked up great grandmother's grave. He said she got the best resting place . I am not sure though as with the lake at the foot of the site it is quite nice. We are going to do some research this winter to see who is buried there besides Ephraim's own family .
